In early July of 2016, the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) called Hofstra University to let them know that Wright State University withdrew from hosting the first presidential debate on September 26 between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. As the alternate, Hofstra was asked if they would be willing to host the debate that was just nine weeks away.
The answer was a collective yes. The university had hosted presidential debates in both 2008 and 2012 and the international exposure, experience for students and educational events surrounding the debate were all enough for administration to determine that it was worth organizing an event of this magnitude, even with such a short notice.
As a PR alumn from Hofstra, I was lucky enough to be invited by the Hofstra University Relations (UR) team to help manage the 4,000 members of the media in attendance.
