Fortune Mag on Zipcar: “The Best New Idea in Business”

CooperKatz client Zipcar is on the cover of Fortune magazine! The September issue hit newsstands today with the headline “The Best New Idea in Business.”
The 7-page story by reporter Paul Keegan covers Chairman and CEO Scott Griffith’s vision for Zipcar, the company’s growth, the broadening appeal of car sharing, the Zipcar iPhone app, the company’s FastFleet program for municipalities, how rental car companies are entering the market, and how auto makers like Ford are taking an interest in car sharing. Accompanying the online version of the story is a video where Griffith speaks with Keegan about the Zipcar technology that makes car sharing possible, and the company’s plan to grow its membership base. In many ways, the story is another sign that car sharing has gone mainstream. As consumers increasingly look to save money, spend smarter and live a more environmentally-conscious lifestyle, Zipcar continues to gain momentum with urbanites across North America and London, England who choose to use a car by the hour rather than own.
This morning, Fortune Managing Editor Andy Serwer appeared on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” to talk about the article and Zipcar’s growth.

Real (Estate) Opinions: Men vs. Women

Often it can seem like men and women are speaking different languages. But when it comes to buying a home – the biggest purchase that most people will make in their lives – good communication is more essential than ever. To find out how gender might influence the home-buying process, Coldwell Banker Real Estate LLC surveyed 1,000 people to see where men and women diverge in making the big decision.
It turns out that men and women are not so different after all – at least in some ways. For instance, when it comes to taking the lead on major financial decisions, almost 70 percent of respondents said it was actually mutual. And over half of both men and women agreed that a home’s security (or lack thereof) would be a deal-breaker.
But in other areas, men and women weren’t quite so similar. Women seemed more quick to make up their minds when purchasing a home – with a majority saying they knew a house was “the one” the first time they saw it. The majority of female respondents would rather live closer to their extended family than their job, while a majority of men said they’d prefer to live closer to work.
When it comes to deciding what to do with that crucial spare room, men and women agreed on the top three (and most practical) options: a bedroom; an office/study; or a family room/den. But that’s just part of the story. The number of men who wanted to turn that spare room into an entertainment center greatly outweighed the number of women who said the same thing. Maybe it’s called a “man cave” for a reason...

Adopt-a-Less-Adoptable-Pet Day!

Homeless pets are looking for one thing: love. They do not care if it is from someone young, old, short or tall. All they need is to be loved and they will love unconditionally in return. However, all too often, potential adopters are looking for much more than just a loyal companion. They arrive at shelters or rescue groups in search of pets of a particular age, size, breed or color, leaving many other homeless animals with little hope of finding a forever home.
That is where Petfinder.com comes in.
Today, Wednesday, August 12, marks the first-ever Adopt-A-Less-Adoptable-Pet Day, which Petfinder.com designated to heighten awareness about this issue, which few people outside of the animal welfare industry even know exist. While it is common knowledge that all homeless animals are in need, not everyone realizes that some pets historically and inherently have more difficulty getting adopted than others.
